Julia is a registered midwife and nurse, and researcher with expertise in randomised trials and the use of routine data in maternity research. She is the Chief Investigator of the POOL Study, and previous Consultant Midwife at the University Hospital of Wales.

The POOL Study – Safety of waterbirth for mothers and babies in the UK

In this presentation, Julia shares the methods and findings of the POOL study – the largest Global study of the safety of waterbirth conducted to date.

The study analyzed outcomes of 87,040 birth records which included recorded water immersion during labour, including:

 

  • Characteristics of women who use of water during labour
  • Outcomes for mothers including rates of obstetric anal sphincter injury
  • Outcomes for babies including need for respiratory support or antibiotics
