Consistency in remote teaching

Institution: University

Institution size: 80 midwifery students
Background and challenges
At Thomas Jefferson University, midwifery students come from across the country, making the program primarily remote, with occasional one-week on-campus sessions to develop hands-on skills in key midwifery competencies. Educators have observed that online education continues to grow in popularity. Therefore they needed a reliable and consistent way to teach birth lacerations that would work for both remote and hands-on sessions, ensuring that students receive high-quality and consistent training regardless of location.
Implementation
Students use GynZone as a preparation tool for hands-on sessions. On campus, during their simulation workshops, they watch GynZone videos together on a large screen. They also revisit the videos during their clinical rotations for further repetition, exploration, and reflection. Educators encourage students to complete courses and quizzes, earning certificates which they upload to share with their educators. Students access GynZone both on computers and through the app, often watching the same videos multiple times to reinforce learning and achieve optimal outcomes. Educators particularly value the webinars, using them to stay updated on the latest research in obstetrics and gynecology.
The impact
- Consistency in remote teaching
- Flexible and accessible access for all midwifery students
- Competent and confident midwifery students
Conclusion
With GynZone, both students and faculty benefited from a structured, high-quality learning experience. Educators found it easier to provide consistent instruction, while students gained confidence and competence in suturing. The ability to access resources anytime, anywhere, helped students feel more prepared and supported throughout their training.
