Lone is a trained midwife educated in Aalborg, Denmark, with international clinical experience from Denmark, Norway, and Greenland. She has been a GynZone instructor since 2016 and is a co-developer of both GynZone online courses and medical simulators for simulation-based training. Lone has particular expertise in secondary repair and clinical supervision, and is a certified lactation consultant, supporting both students, clinicians and patients.

This is how midwifery students master suturing

Presenter: Lone Halkier Egelie, midwife at Tønsberg Hospital, GynZone workshop instructor, and lecturer at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN).

In collaboration with GynZone, USN has developed a teaching programme for students in which online courses are combined with hands-on workshops, carefully planned in relation to the clinical placement periods. In this webinar, the programme is presented to inspire educators in Scandinavia.

Prior to the first clinical placement period, students receive training in:

  • Diagnosis of birth tears
  • Analgesia and its management for diagnosis and suturing
  • Basic surgical skills
  • Suturing of grade 1 and grade 2 tears

In a later school period, three workshops are added on:

  • Performing and suturing a mediolateral episiotomy
  • Pudendal block, transcutaneous and transvaginal technique
  • Suturing of the rectovaginal fascia

The programme is evaluated positively by students, who experience confidence in performing the tasks, and by supervisors and clinical placement sites, who report a high level of competence and professional confidence.
