Improving postpartum care in fragile regions worldwide
Maternity foundation

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Global reach: 500,000 midwives and healthcare professionals
Background and challenges
Every year, millions of women in fragile and low-resource settings experience birth injuries, often worsened by insufficient access to skilled repairs. The consequences can be lifelong: pain, infections, incontinence, and social stigma. Yet midwives in vulnerable regions frequently lack structured, evidence-based training opportunities. At the same time, global aid is declining while crises are escalating, putting additional pressure on already strained health systems. This creates an urgent need for scalable solutions that can strengthen the skills of frontline maternal health providers.Implementation
To address this gap, a new Danish cross-sector partnership has been launched by Maternity Foundation, GynZone, Angella Invest, and Oasicare. Together we have mobilised approximately 1 million DKK to develop a digital training module focused on suturing and the management of birth lacerations. The module will be integrated into Maternity Foundation’s Safe Delivery App: An offline-capable, free learning tool that has already supported more than 500,000 midwives and healthcare professionals globally.
Drawing on GynZone’s 17 years of expertise in perineal repair training and co-developed with Maternity Foundation, the module will offer practical, evidence-based guidance in postpartum repairs for care providers, accessible even in the most remote settings. Development begins in late 2025, with global rollout planned for the second half of 2026.
The impact
By expanding the Safe Delivery App to include repair of obstetric lacerations, the partnership aims to improve maternal outcomes, enhance midwives’ clinical skills, and strengthen postpartum care worldwide. The initiative demonstrates how collaboration between NGOs, private companies, and mission-driven investors can drive meaningful, scalable impact in maternal health.
Conclusion
Advancing care-provider access to qualified training is key to ensuring safer births and better care for women with birth injuries. By combining expertise and cross-sector commitment, the partners are bringing essential knowledge into the hands of midwives – ultimately supporting healthier futures for women globally.
